This is a charrette in space design, lets start with buildings. Buildings and spaces with successful design embody rhythm, harmony, and proportion similar to musical compositions, but in a static, spatial form.
These two forms of art are often paired with “music is liquid architecture,” . This school of thought highlights how both arts invoke emotion and structure space; either through sound over time or materials in space.
In a turnaround of this process, music can inspire architecture too. For literal examples, famous auditoriums like vineyard-style Elbphilharmonie and Philharmonie de Paris, the shoebox-shaped Musikverein, the immersive Walt Disney Concert Hall, and the historic Auditorium Theatre are all designed to elevate the listening experience. Beyond that technical layer, there are buildings like Steven Holl’s Stretto House in Dallas which is conceptually inspired from Béla Bartók’s Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. So the relation between what we listen to and what we design are more closely related than we can think.
